In many African tribes, this practice is still normal. Bare chested women going hunting along with men is a sight you can easily find on internet. The thing is, if we are born and brought up in an atmosphere where all the ladies around us are with bare torso, we are less likely to feel this as weird. Just as the uncovered faces in most of the societies are normal, whereas as few societies prefer covered faces. We live in an unpredictable world - who knows, bare chested men & women becomes a new normal again after some 100 or 1000 years!

The distinction between the cloth as a status symbol vs. a breast cover completely changes how you read the whole history. Men removed it before superiors too. Women of ‘higher’ castes wore it but kept their breasts exposed anyway. The fight was never about covering up it was about who got to signal rank
